Alright, after a long wait, China has finally decided to unblock Blogger again.

Firefox Addon: Fast Dial

I found this nifty little add-on the other day. It provides fast and easy access to your favorite sites through thumbnails or customizable images.
Basically, it replaces the about:blank page with panel of thumbnails of websites which you can customize and view in a more graphically pleasing way.

Here it is on my Firefox browser (opening a new empty tab):


Definitely worth checking out.

Baby Kittens

A cat gave birth to several baby kittens in the bushes right beside our school building, there's 5 of them but i guess people started taking the kittens home so there's only 3 now, 2 white ones and the odd ginger one (not in this video)

Distance from Lightning

We have a particularly heavy rainstorm going on this afternoon (and it's still going as i'm posting right now)

Most of you have wondered after hearing a deafening boom of thunder, 'how close was that last thunderbolt?'

Well, here's a simple method of determining the distance from lightning (courtesy of Wikihow):

1. Watch the sky for a flash of lightning.

2. Count the number of seconds until you hear thunder. If you have a watch with a second hand or a digital watch that has seconds, begin timing as soon as you see the lightning and stop as soon as you hear the thunder start. If you don’t have a watch, do your best to count the seconds accurately. Say "One one thousand, two one thousand etc." in your mind for each second.

3. Divide the number of seconds by 5 to calculate the distance in miles (or divide by 3 for kilometers). In other words if you counted 18 seconds from when you saw the lightning, the strike was 3.6 miles (6 kilometers) from your location. The delay between when you see lightning and when you hear thunder occurs because sound travels much, much more slowly than light.


So with that formula..

A flash of lightning, followed by a long delay for the thunder.
- the lightning struck relatively far away.

A flash of lightning, followed by a short delay for the thunder.
- the lightning struck somewhere close to you.

A flash of lightning, followed immediately by thunder.
- HOLYCRAP that scared the shit out of me! Really close, probably one of the adjacent buildings or your building. (this happened to me 5 minutes ago. i jumped, literally.)

Alarms blared at 2:28pm today as everyone stood in silence for 3 minutes to mourn those dead from the Sichuan earthquake that struck on May 12th.

Outside, a siren was sounded whilst cars, trains, and ships joined in by sounding their horns in a "wail of grief". From the inside of our classroom, everyone stood up in silence and gave a thought to those who have perished.

The period of Earthquake National Mourning will last from May 19th, 2008 - May 21st, 2008.

My prayers go out to the victims of the disaster, to those who have lost their families and friends, and those affected by the earthquake.

To those lost,
May they rest in peace.

Blogspot Blocked In China

Seems that such is the case once more.
This is a fix for Firefox users, these proxies are alternate IPs of the websites being blocked. Note that some of them will not work but I know it does get to blogspot for sure (otherwise i wouldn't be posting would I).

1. Open Notepad and paste this into a blank page:

2. Save the file as (without the quotes) - 'proxy.pac'
3. Go to your main firefox install folder, usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
4. Drag and drop the proxy.pac file in.
5. Open up firefox and click [Tools] > [Options] > [Advanced] Tab > [Network] Tab, and under connections, click [Settings]. Select the bottom most radio button for Automatic Proxy Configuration URL and browse to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\proxy.pac (again, remember your main firefox install folder and change values accordingly)
6. Click [Reload] and OK to close.

This should enable you to get through to Blogspot, Wikipedia, LiveJournal, and Wordpress

Yeah, it really annoys me how China keeps blocking blogspot.
I finally got through today using a proxy.pac configuration in firefox using an alternate blogspot IP.
Thank goodness for alternate servers.

Nothing much has been happening recently so don't expect too much.

What Annoys Me

Hair stuck inside the LCD screen.

Yes this happened to me today. I turned on my laptop, opened up the browser, and right there on the bottom right corner was this GODDAMN STRAND OF HAIR stuck between the LCD and the white light board and it stood out like a freakin 5 billion megawatt lightbulb against a black wall. And this would probably be the only time a single strand of hair would affect your behavior (yes i went mental over that). I hate crap on my screen. I like having it clean all the time, and seeing that hair stuck there was like the equivalent of sticking a needle into my eyeball. Eye piercingly horrible.

How'd i know it was hair and not a crack? Well if u tap the screen, it moves. Moved like a hair.

Anyways, i got it fixed by opening up my laptop back at home and taking the freaking screen out. BUT, i couldn't get to the hair. Sucks doesn't it? I settled for just shaking and tapping the damn thing till it went into the rightmost blackened corner where it doesn't light up. Yes, finally out of sight. Good riddance retard hair.

By god, I hope it doesn't come back to torture me..

X Games Ticket

My friends and I were at Subway in Gubei Carrefour eating subs (well i wasn't but 2 of them were anyway) and then the cashier guy comes up to our table and hands all five of us these X Games tickets. So we're all like WOW that's awesome! but upon closer inspection, we realize that the event was on a Wednesday afternoon (damnit school, damnit!).

So yeah, i don't need it. If anyone wants it, leave a comment. Otherwise i'll just keep it.

& the end of another week! Though i must say it's been quite relaxing for me. I skipped monday cause i was sick, and the rest of the week was just movies or free time and a little bit of class.

Might get braces off tomorrow, or that's what the dentist said anyway. Oh well, i hope he ain't kidding this time.

The prawn went missing when i came back this afternoon. My brothers claim to have not seen it since last night. Something happened between 11pm - 7am. We haven't interrogated the ayi, but it seems she prepared prawns for dinner again today. Our victim may be among the sauteed.

Prawns in the Bathroom

Okay so, pretty WTF moment in the bathroom today. I walk in and i see this bucket filled with water with a freakin prawn swimming around in it.

I guess it's a lucky prawn, saved from dinner by my brother. Bless him. Though i have no idea how the prawn will survive for long in a bucket..

5 Stars

Now, in Shanghai, most taxi drivers have an ID card displayed on the passenger side of the front seats that show their ID numbers, picture, and a star rating of their 'performance' shall we say. Normally these star ratings range from two to three stars (from what i've seen anyway), but when i got into this taxi one Saturday afternoon, this was what i saw.

Looks like someone thinks this driver deserves 2 stars + 3 clearly hand-drawn in ink stars and a + luxury rating.
Very nice.



Also, Facebook has integrated an IM system, 'Facebook Chat', on the bottom right side of every page.
Now you can stalk all your friends and see when they go on facebook! Way to go.
Buuuuuuut, there's always a stay offline option to avoid that.
Then again, we have walls to post on already. hm.

Another Week

& yet another tiring weekend. With 4hrs of band practice on Saturday and 3hrs Sunday preparing for a performance we didn't get into (just cause the judges favored another group of people. 'tards.), a sleepover, and an asthma relapse, you could say I didn't exactly have it relaxed.
Anyways, I woke up in the middle of Sunday night to a coughing fit and a wheezing chest and i knew that the asthma had come back. Clutching my chest, I could almost see my inflamed respiratory passages lined with far too much mucus, air rushing through in tiny amounts as my lungs screamed for more oxygen while my body kept up with heavy breathing. After a rummage through the medicine cabinet and finding out that there was no Ventolin (it's an asthma relief puff), I started to get worried. Thankfully my mom came out at just the right time and handed me the drug, which I promptly administered to myself. And not a moment too soon, those air passages reopened, allowing a sound restful sleep--

Heck, how the hell did i manage to write like that.

Anyways,
I skipped school on Monday to visit the doctor and get more rest & sleep. Meh, when you're sick, you can skip anything.

On another note, our band saw the funniest thing while we were in a taxi. More on that later.

An Introduction.

So, i've created another blog it seems. China has this very annoying censorship system that seems to go against me and block every single blog I use; xanga, wordpress, livejournal. You name it, i use it, it's blocked. It seems China won't be having a problem with blogspot as it's been available for quite a while now ever since it was unblocked. I am hoping it will stay like this and even more so that it won't be blocked again, at least not in my lifetime.

I curse the firewall and I curse the system, yet, it's the only thing I have. I guess i'll just have to live with it.
